Where the major is housed shapes what you actually study

Two schools can both offer a "Bachelor of Science in Data Science" and graduate students with very different toolkits. A data science major housed in a computer science department often emphasises programming, algorithms, and machine learning systems. The same major in a statistics department leans on probability, statistical inference, and study design. In a business school it leans on analytics, decision modeling, and visualisation. None of these is wrong — but they prepare students for different downstream paths.

Verify which department offers the major at each candidate school, what the core requirements are, and which applied or capstone experiences are required versus optional. Two programs with identical names can have a 20-credit gap in math and CS prerequisites.

Common patterns

How data science programs differ across school types

Research universities. Data science is often a joint program between CS, statistics, and applied math, with deep elective tracks and undergraduate research opportunities. Course access and capstone availability can be capacity-capped at large flagships.

Liberal arts colleges. Smaller data science programs (often combined statistics + CS + a domain minor) emphasise breadth, statistical reasoning, and writing. Class sizes are smaller; faculty access is higher; specialised electives may be fewer.

Business-school-housed programs. "Business analytics" or "data analytics" majors emphasise applied modeling, dashboarding, and decision support — strong for analyst roles, sometimes lighter on rigorous statistical foundations.

Community colleges. Two-year associate degrees in data analytics or computer information systems exist at some community colleges, with transfer pathways into four-year data science majors. Verify articulation with both institutions.

"Data science" is not the only relevant major

A statistics major with a strong CS minor often gives stronger preparation for graduate study or research roles than a generic data science major. Similarly, a CS major with a stats minor is competitive for ML engineering roles. The major label is less important than the specific course path you take.
