HBCU (Historically Black College or University)

A U.S. college historically founded to serve African-American students before 1964 — about 100 institutions hold this designation.

HBCUs are accredited U.S. colleges established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the principal mission of educating Black students. There are approximately 100 HBCUs across 19 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Famous examples include Howard University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Hampton University, Fisk University, and Tuskegee University. HBCUs are open to all students regardless of race; they are not race-restricted in admissions. Federal funding and special HBCU scholarships are available.
