Minority-Serving Institution (MSI)
A federally designated category for colleges that serve a significant proportion of students from a specific underrepresented minority group.
Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) are colleges federally designated for serving high proportions of specific racial/ethnic groups. The categories include HBCUs (Black-serving, by historical mission), HSIs (Hispanic-Serving Institutions, ≥25 % undergraduate Hispanic enrollment), TCUs (Tribal Colleges and Universities, chartered by federally recognized tribes), AANAPISIs (Asian American & Native American Pacific Islander-Serving), PBIs (Predominantly Black Institutions by enrollment), and ANNHs (Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian-Serving). The designation comes with eligibility for specific federal grant programs.
