CampusPin Glossary
Out-of-state tuition
The higher tuition rate public universities charge students who are not legal residents of the school's state.
Out-of-state tuition applies at public colleges to any student who has not established legal residency in that state. Private colleges generally do not distinguish between in-state and out-of-state. Out-of-state tuition can be 3–4× higher than in-state at the same institution. Students considering a public university across state lines should weigh whether the program difference justifies the cost gap, and whether merit aid or regional tuition compacts narrow the gap.
