CampusPin Glossary
"Why us?" essay
A short supplemental essay asking why an applicant wants to attend a specific school — judged largely on specificity to that school.
The "Why us?" essay (also called "Why this college") is a common Common App supplement. Strong responses are highly specific: named programs, faculty, courses, traditions, and student organizations the applicant has researched. Generic answers ("great campus, smart students, beautiful trees") signal low demonstrated interest and read as interchangeable. The best Why-Us essays explicitly connect the applicant's goals to opportunities only this school provides.
