Work Without a Bachelor’s Degree Is 70% of U.S. Jobs. Here Is What It Actually Pays
Occupations most people enter without a bachelor's degree account for 70% of U.S. employment. Only 1.1% of that work sits in occupations paying $100,000 or more, yet 29% of it pays above the typical job in its own state, and the states where that happens most are not the ones the salary lists name.

Executive summary
Most U.S. work does not typically start with a bachelor's degree. Across all 51 U.S. jurisdictions (the 50 states and the District of Columbia), occupations the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports as typically entered with an associate degree, a postsecondary certificate, some college, a high-school diploma, or no formal credential account for 108,097,720 jobs, or 69.5% of all employment the federal wage survey covers.
The familiar way to write about that work is a list of the ones paying six figures. Counted rather than listed, those occupations are a rounding error: 1,218,270 jobs, or 1.1% of non-degree employment. 120 distinct occupations clear $100,000 somewhere in the country, and the typical state has 10 of them. Planning a life around that slice is planning around one job in a hundred.
A local yardstick is more useful, and it changes the answer. Measured against each state's OWN median wage across all occupations, 29% of non-degree employment pays better than the typical job in that state: roughly three jobs in ten, not one in a hundred. And the state ordering reverses. The places where non-degree work most often beats the local median are Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Indiana, Iowa. The places where it least often does are District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Virginia, which are exactly the high-wage states a raw-dollar list would recommend.
The mechanism is not mysterious. A state with many highly paid degree-holding workers has a high median, so the same non-degree occupation clears the bar less often there. That is an argument about the yardstick, not about the work, and it is the reason a national "best states for jobs without a degree" list, ranked in dollars, points in the wrong direction for anyone who has to live where they work.

Methodology
Wages, state employment, and the all-occupation state median come from the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics May 2025 state file, via a committed, checksum-pinned snapshot (sha256 456184f482ce…).
Typical entry-level education comes from the BLS Employment Projections programme. It is a NATIONAL assignment for the occupation describing what entrants usually hold, not a legal requirement, and not a statement that any individual employer accepts it.
"Without a bachelor's" means the occupation's typical entry education is one of: no formal educational credential, high school diploma or equivalent, some college (no degree), postsecondary nondegree award, or associate degree. Every occupation in the source file falls into that set or into bachelor's-and-above; an unrecognised label fails the build rather than being silently classified.
An occupation counts toward a state only when the survey released both a wage and an employment figure for it there. Unreleased estimates are excluded from numerator and denominator alike, never treated as zero.
A wage BLS publishes only as "at or above $239,200 a year", its reporting cap, counts toward the $100,000 threshold, because the floor already clears it. It is never used as a best-paid figure, because a floor cannot be ordered against another floor.
The local measure compares each occupation's state median against that same state's median across ALL occupations, then weights by the occupation's state employment. It answers "what share of non-degree jobs here pay better than the typical job here".
Every figure in this report is recomputed by scripts/build-non-degree-pay.mjs from the two committed federal snapshots. None is hand-entered.
Limitations
- A median describes everyone currently working in an occupation, experienced and new alike. It is not a starting salary and not what a person entering the occupation should expect in their first year.
- Wages are not adjusted for cost of living. That cuts both ways here: it is the reason a raw-dollar ranking favours expensive states, and it means the local-yardstick measure should be read as "relative to local pay", not "relative to local living costs".
- Typical entry education is national. A state where an occupation is licensed more tightly, or where employers prefer a degree, is not visible in this measure.
- "Typically entered without a bachelor's" is not "needs no education". Many of these occupations require an apprenticeship, a licence, a certificate, or an associate degree, and this analysis does not price the time or cost of obtaining them.
- Self-employed workers are outside the OEWS survey entirely, which under-counts occupations where self-employment is common, such as the skilled trades.
- This compares occupations, not people. Everything here is an association between an occupation and what it pays, never evidence that education caused the difference: the comparison is descriptive, not a ranking of states or of career paths, and it cannot say what any individual would have earned had they chosen differently.
- The state pattern is composition. A state where non-degree work clears the local median more often may simply have fewer highly paid degree-holding workers raising that median, which says as much about the yardstick as about the work.
- Employment projections and wage estimates describe the present labour market, not the one a student now choosing a path will enter.
